Under the typical high-latitude conditions of temperature, productivity and settlement of chlorophyll and phaeophytin to the sediment, many benthic organisms in the Antarctic show strong seasonal variation. Although meiofauna comprise an important component of the southpolar benthic ecosystem, our knowledge of them is limited. This atlas presents in a synthetic form the hydrodynamical, geological and biological characteristics of one of the most studied region of the French littoral. Geologic and geophysical data of the Saint-Brieuc Bay show that the deep basement consists of pre-palaeozoic or palaeozoic sedimentary series in the centre of the Bay, whereas metamorphic and magmatic formations are dominant in coastal regions. The location of superficial sediments in the Bay, is mainly due to marine currents. Distribution of vanadium in bottom sediments from the marine coastal area of the Egyptian seas OceanDocs

The present study aims to measure the concentration of vanadium in 73 sediment samples collected along the coastal area of the Egyptian seas (Mediterranean and Red Seas). The results indicated that the mean value of vanadium in Red Sea sediments (52.61 µg/g) was higher than the mean value of the Mediterranean (40.58 µg/g) and the variation between the two means was insignificant (p = 0.241). This result could be attributed to the high petroleum activities of the Red Sea. Along the Mediterranean coast, the sector in front of Port Said area exhibited the highest mean value of vanadium (103.9 µg/g) than other sectors, which suffers from many sources of pollution. Dynamique sédimentaire et répartition granulométrique des sédiments de surface dans la frange littorale Ras Taguermess-Ras Marmour (golfe de Gabès) OceanDocs

Les analyses granulométriques des sédiments superficiels de la zone côtière située entre Ras Taguermess et Ras Marmours montrent que les petits fonds (-2 à -10 m) sont couverts par des sables fins aux sables grossiers (la moyenne est entre 0,39 et 3,34 ), généralement mal à très mal classés. Cependant, le haut de plage situé entre Ras Taguermess et Ras Marmour est couvert essentiellement par des sables fins et des sables moyens (la moyenne est entre 1,082 et 2,823 ). La répartition spatiale des sables ne montre pas un grano-classement décroissant ou croissant des sédiments de la côte vers le large. The results of the grain size and mineralogical analysis of the surface sediments of the Gulf of Gabes, taken with Various depths between the coast Sfax-Zarzis and the isobaths -100 m, allow to identify the origin of these sediments and to specify the factors and the phenomena, which are involved in their transport and their deposit. The mineralogical study resulted in high lighting a clear relation between the recent sedimentary stock of the gulf of Gabès and the bordering geological formations. Estudio de las características sedimentológicas del área comprendida entre Ancon y el Canal del Morro (Golfo de Guayaquil) OceanDocs

Se estudian 146 muestras de sedimentos superficiales de fondo del Golfo de Guayaquil. Se presenta las características de los sedimentos en base al análisis granulométrico, parámetros estadísticos y distribución de los sedimentos; y se comparan estas distribuciones con otras de trabajos anteriores. Se establece que los sedimentos arenosos y sus diferentes combinaciones predominan en el área, ocupando casi un 80% de la misma. Los sedimentos limosos se ubican en el Noroeste, mientras que en el Oeste sólo encontramos una pequeña cantidad de fragmentos de conchas. El análisis comparartivo con investigaciones realizadas en 1975, no presenta variaciones significativas en la textura y distribución de los sedimentos.

Etude de l’hydrodynamique sédimentaire de la lagune de Bizerte OceanDocs

Les résultats des analyses granulométriques des sédiments de surface de la lagune de Bizerte, prélevés à différentes profondeurs, ont permis d’identifier la nature de ses sédiments et de préciser les facteurs et les phénomènes qui interviennent dans leur transport et leur dépôt. L’étude sédimentologique a montré que les matériaux détritiques d’origine continentale et les sédiments provenant de l’érosion des côtes sont soumis à une dynamique qui est contrôlée essentiellement par l’action des courants dus essentiellement aux vents.

Guidelines for the Study of Shoreline Change in the Western Indian Ocean Region OceanDocs

This manual sets out an approach to the identification and monitoring of shoreline change and its causative processes at local and regional scales that is appropriate to the coastal management problems of the region as reported by the regional contributors. The approach aims to promote the targeting of sparse resources on the acquisition and provision of information that is most relevant to the management of the problem. The procedures for monitoring shoreline change and its contributory processes are described, including the use of accessible relevant regional information and data or meta-data sets.

Répartition granulométriques et minéralogiques des sédiments de surface dans le Golfe de Tunis OceanDocs

Les résultats des analyses granulométriques et minéralogiques des sédiments de surface du golfe de Tunis, prélevés à différentes profondeurs entre Sidi El Mekki et le Cap Bon, ont permis d’identifier l’origine de ces sédiments et de préciser les modes de transport et de dépôt. L’étude granulométrique a montré que les matériaux détritiques dans le golfe de Tunis sont d’origine continentale. L’étude minéralogique a permit de mettre en évidence une nette relation entre le stock sédimentaire récent du golfe de Tunis et les formations géologiques bordières. Seasonal variation of microbial population from sediments of Vellar Estuary, South India. ArchiMer

A seasonal study on the occurrence and distribution of total aerobic microbial population (TMP), total aerobic heterotrophic bacteria (THB), actinomycetes and fungi in the sediments of Vellar Estuary, South India (11 degree 29'N 79 degree 46'E) was carried out during Jan. to Dec. 1975. Sediment samples were collected at monthly intervals, from 4 stations and analysed microbiologically. In general, bacterial population was found to be dominant followed by actinomycetes and fungi. The max peak for TMP, THB and fungi were recorded in Nov. in all stations. Monsoon season supported TMP, THB and fungi to a high level and it was summer for actinomycetes. Some textural characteristics and organic matter contents of recent sediments in the Bonny estuary, Niger delta OceanDocs

Forty-eight bottom sediments samples collected from the Bonny estuary were analyzed for textural Characteristics and organic carbon content. The dominant lithologies are sand, sandy mud, mud, sandy clay and clay. Pattern of sediment distribution consists of mud, sandy mud and clay in the swallow marginal areas of the river channel and creeks, while the channel centers are predominantly fine to coarse sand with graphic mean size ranging from 0.74 to 2.71Ø. Inclusive standard deviation values ranged from 0.35 to 1.64Ø suggesting the poorly to very well sorted nature of these sediments. Skewness varied from fine skewed to strong coarse skewed with 52% of the samples negatively skewed. Graphic kurtosis ranged from 0.92 to1.95 [mesokurtic to very leptokurtic]....
